Abstract
In an environment that produces the mega-projects and super-structures at such speed as we're all familiar with, a group of individuals were struck with the idea of fostering a more open, collaborative and broad-based urban design process. Based on the premise that cities are about people and that visualising the future belongs to all of us, that process was given the name "Designing Hong Kong". It began with a challenge: "to envision new ways to improve our future living environment and create a forum for sharing those ideas." However, it was not conceived as a one-off event but a continuing course of exploration and interaction in the hope of achieving a more democratic, participatory planning approach for Hong Kong. Organised by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) with support from the Young Architects League (YAL), Jack Sidener, Professor of Architecture at CUHK and Christopher Law, Director of Oval Partnership and member of YAL, were kind enough to contribute this report.
