Abstract
The profession sometimes thinks of them as 'kids'. Charming naivete steep learning curves, youthful enthusiasm, abundant optimism. Fresh architecture graduates. In truth, they are more important to the profession than it tends to remember. These young people are literally the future of our staffs and our profession, not to mention our cities. In one decade, they will be in the key positions in our practices, or competing for commissions with their own. In two decades, they'll be the ones to say, 'My Director, it's time we discussed your retirement.' And before all that, they'll the ones we depend on, nurture, educate, exploit, overwork, underpay and hopefully, inspire. And every time we grit our teeth at one of their (innocent) mistakes, or lose patience with their inexperience, we should remind ourselves that only yesterday, it was us in those sneakers, trying our best to learn the infinite complexities and devices of the profession of architecture.
