Abstract
Founded barely a decade ago, this thriving Spanish firm specialises in solutions-based design of corporate, residential and commerical space and architecture, and has produced, as evidenced here, buildings that say anything but 'corporate formulaic'. Exploiting the spectacular Mediterranean climate, A-Cero has built a number of houses, some quite large, that seem to capture light and mould it, in folds of overlapping space that define contemporary modernism. Surfaces, even when textured, remain clean and defined; walls are understood as planes; smaller details such as railings and stair treads are chances for subtle flair. The language is familiar but pushed a bit, not loudly dramatic yet strong and at times almost edgy. The details reveal a confident mastery of vocabulary and materials, the larger views a thorough comprehension of proportion as well as the sculptural characteristics of standalone domestic architecture. A-Cero contributes to the already rich banquet of south European small-scale buildings a meal of good tastes. (1) Santiago Houses (2) Casa Joaquin - Memory house in La Coruna (3) House Encinas 4
