Abstract
Directly in front of the entrance to GIL's latest hotel project, thhe Beijing Marriott City Wall lie the remnants of the city's ancient perimeter, dating back to Ming times. GIL Art and Design Consultants chose to reference it throughout their design for this city-centre Marriott, which occupies a prominent site opposite Beijing's main train station. Principal & Managing Director Doris Chui elected to subtly allude to traditional Chinese design throughout the hotel in what she calls "neo Chinese" referencing, not least in the lobby chairs which follow the high-backed form of the traditional Chinese lacquered chair but render it in mother-of-pearl white rather than the typical red or black. Chui gave the Chinese screen a twist throughout the hotel, employing a crackled-ice lattice-work motif across the ceiling of the 'Provincia' bar/restaurant and on screens used as feature walls in the common areas of the hotel.
