Abstract
The Hong Kong Institute of Architects collaborated with the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) and selected "Art School" as the design theme for its 11th Young Architects Award, the results of which were announced and exhibited at the HKAC recently. The entries brought out a variety of innovative ideas from the candidates. From among a total of nine submissions, Tim Li Man Wai, architect with the Development and Construction Branch of the Housing Authority and one of the board members of Para/Site, was selected as the Young Architect for 2001, and Ariel Tse Hing Cheong and Franklin Leung were awarded honourable mentions. The annual Young Architects Award, co-organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and Asian Cultural Council (HK), and sponsored by the Hsin Chong - K N Godfrey Yeh Education Fund was established to honour and acknowledge the talents and contributions of young HKIA members between the ages 25 and 35. Winners are selected by a panel of jurors based on a submitted design project, their professional achievements and social participation, plus a proposed study tour in the United States which forms part of the award. This year, the panel of distinguished jurors were: Rocco Yim ( Rocco Design Limited), Steve Leung (Steve Leung Architects Limited), Anthony Pong (The Young Architects' Award Recipient for 1994), SL Cheung (Hsin Chong -KN Godfrey Yeh Education Fund), Michelle Vosper (Asian Cultural Council, HK) and Louis Yu (Hong Kong Art Centre). Alongside the awards presentations, an exhibition presenting "The Other Side of Architects" showcased the talents of architects beyond the realm of architecture in other forms of art and design such as literature, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fashion and so forth. An inspirational speech given by Dr Tao Ho reminded all architects to retain their passion and not lose sight of their dreams, no matter how challenging new ideas may seem.
