Abstract
Sun Hung Kai Properties' Royal Palms, the follow up to the Pam Springs housing development, is located in Wo Shang Wai, Yuen Long. According to the sales literature, the developers have "brought back the meaning of neighbourhood". In a densely populated place such as Hong Kong, where home is where the high rise is, such a slogan has real currency. On the surface, the Royal Palms is an Asian reproduction of the American dream, candy coloured copies of Western living. But underneath, this development is perhaps what it claims to be, a return to the village living once commonplace in the territory.
