Abstract
In Hong Kong, where land is scarce, a large school campus offering multi-faceted learning opportunities is rare. The concept of school village originates from the idea of pooling land resources from separate schools on the same site and through holistic design, to provide a fully equipped campus offering a variety of shared facilities.
In addition to sharing resources, the close relationship of schools encourages interaction among students which, in turn, creates a sitmulating and dynamic environment for teaching and learning. It is hoped that, through the school village concept, a community spirit will be cultivated which could also be extended to the areas beyond the school boundaries by involving parents and local residents.
The first school village project in Hong Kong, the Po Kong Village Road School Village project, commenced design in 1999 and the construction was completed in 2002.
