Abstract
"Unless Hong Kong provides an environment that is good to live in, how are we going to attract or retain the talented people that business and the economy need in order to grow." Hong Kong chief executive Tung Chee Wa Hong Kong's many demanding architectural challenges were the focus of the Designing Hong Kong Symposium. held from February 20-22. It was organised by the Department of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Centre for Urban and Environmental Management of the University of Hong Kong. The symposium included workshops held at Pacific Place in Admiralty. It displayed research by architecture students on Hong Kong's Urban Design and Planning. Contributors to the symposium included such internationally renowned professionals as Cesar Pelli, who was the main speaker, and energy and sustainable design expert Amory Lovins, as well as local speakers: Mike Moir, director and general manager of Swire Properties and Citizens' Party chairwoman Christine Loh. The event could not be more timely. The current economic crisis in Asia raises questions about the shape and speed of future urban growth.
