Abstract
The Indonesian Government has been sponsoring a programme to move millions of people from over-populated regions to sparsely settled areas. The programme, known as transmigrasi, receives World Bank backing and in this article two consultants, hydrogeologist S. Puri and hydrologist R.R. Helliwell, describe the work they carried out on behalf of the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works. The water resource studies were part of a comprehensive study covering land use, soils, forestry, detailed mapping, urban planning, agronomy and socio-economics. (1) Travelling light The authors of this article were working with Binnie and Partners (consulting engineers, London) who were advising one of the lead consultants, Clyde Surveys of UK, on aspects related mainly to water supplies.
