Abstract
Born in Hiroshima in 1933, Mitsuaki Tanaka saw the worst of war when an atom bomb devastated his native city. As a young man, he took the name Sora, meaning sky in Japanese, in an attempt to link himself with nature by creating reflections of peace and life from, among other natural materials, a solid block of stone. In the past three decades, Sora's artistic spirit has infused the world around him with creative energy, a fact evidenced not only by his impressive body of work but by the grown family with whom he proudly shares exhibition space. Michiko, his wife of 30 years, and their son Mitsuki and daughter Eri, have all since joined Mitsuaki Sora in fashioning beautiful objects out of stone, procuring international recognition along the way.
