Abstract
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1954 and 1956 respectively, brothers Carlos and Gerard Pascal moved to Mexico City in 1972 to commence their architectural training at the Iberoamericana University. Later taking up residency in Maxico City, the two brothers established their practice, Pascal Arquitectos, in 1979 to concentrate on architecture, interior design, furniture design and landscape architecture. From the outset, the duo quickly made a name for themselves with a string of interior projects concentrated in and around Mexico City's premier residential districts such Lomas de Chapultepec, known as the lungs of the city with its abundant lakes and gardens. From the 1980s onwards, the brothers' portfolio has widened to include a variety of commercial projects from office blocks and shopping malls to ballrooms, clinics and religious bathhouses. For the Pascal brothers, successful architecture is that which manages to address through space both man's physcial and spiritual needs. All projects, irrespective of physical scale or nature, are a challenge, they say, and their professional advantage lies in not specialising in any one area, enabling them to approach each endeavour with a fresh creative solution. In their work, they try to incorporate local technology, renewable resources and the hand of the artisan, looking for modernity rather than fleeting fashions and avoiding the recreation of metaphors that are out of step with their environment.
