Abstract
Since the development focus of Hong Kong shifted towards the western part of the territory in the late 1980s, the population of new towns in Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun has experienced rapid growth. According to the Territory Development Department's projections, Tuen Mun's present population of 490,000 will grow by 140,000 to 630,000 in ten years, while Yuen Long's population will grow more modestly from the present 167,000 to 280,000. Tin Shui Wai, which used to be a large patch of fish ponds, now houses 150,000 and will eventually accommodate 349,000. By 2001, the whole of Northwest New Territories is expected to be home to 1.35 million people.
