Abstract
The newly constructed Awaji International Garden City project in Japan was the backdrop for the international gardening and landscaping exhibition - Japan Flora 2000 - which opened in March and continued through to September. The 350 hectare site on Awaji Island (Hyogo Prefecture) lies in Osaka Bay, a mere boat ride form Kansai International Airport. Hailed as a new cultural centre where people are encouraged to commune with nature, Japanese architect Tadao Ando was chosen to design the buildings which make up the centre of the development, known as Awaji Yumebutai. Amenities comprise an international conference centre, hotel, observation terrace with restaurants and shops, a greenhouse, an open-air theatre, a tea-house and an underground wedding chapel. The spirit of Ando's architecture is carried through to the interiors of the five star hotel. Undertaken by Gauer Design, the Westin Awaji Island Resort is being promoted as quite a different vacation / business destination.
