Abstract
It seems there comes a time in every architect's life, when the creation of edifices to contain space is not enough. It is at this time that their attention gets irresistibly drawn to a consideration of what goes in it. More specifically they suddenly develop a fascination for funiture, chairs in particular. Le Corbusier was among the first to succumb and then to become as famous for funiture as he was for his architecture. It is testimony to the strength of his designs that they are still as popular as ever. Other eminent names have followed his example since, though few have reached his pinnacle of (commercial) success. Establishing the tradition along with Corbusier were architects such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright, and was perpetuated by famous contemporary names like Frank Gehry, Micheal Graves, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, Don Brinkmann and Ron Arad.
