Abstract
When completed in 1992, the Times Square development will consist of 35-storey and 20-storey towers above a ten-floor podium and six-level basement. With the foundation being built by Bachy Soletanche Group (BSG) on the former Hong Kong Tramways depot site, which is bounded by Russell, Matheson and Sharp streets and Canal Road East, the project will cost in excess of $2 billion and provide 186,000 sq m of commercial floor area. Construction of Times Square involves a somewhat, but not entirely, typical Hong Kong soil profile, with fill underlain by sea sand, alluvium, CDG/HDG materials and a granite bedrock. Two new-to-Hong Kong civil construction techniques — Hydrofraise and CWS Joint — were used respectively in connection with the excavation and foundation works.
