Hong Kong Heritage Museum: glimpses of the past

Abstract
Flimsy wooden panels marked out a small room where a washbasin and a chamber-pot sat half hidden under a bunk bed. A linen curtain, partially drawn, hung across the front on a line weighed down by a still row of the day's clothing. A Chinese fan-palm rested on the rattan mattress; a bare bulb threw its light on the gridded floor, heating up a pod of air heavy with the odours of a long, hard day. Some of our parents or grandparents remember such a room well, having lived in one during the 1950s. But now, instead of pointing to the background in a black-and-white oldie in which the anxious heroine discussed finances with the poverty-sticken hero while he coughed dark patches into his handkerchief, our parents and grandparents can simply point to a reconstructed scene in the newly-opened Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
