Abstract
In the office of architect Tao Ho there is a drawing of a candlestick holder he created for Austrian crystal manufacturer Swarovsky in 1996. The holder, made of crystal and divisible along its curving axis, represents the yin-yang symbol. The creation proves appropriate as Ho talks about his life as an architect, artist and designer. Running through the discussion is the duality of yin and yang, the conflicting pulls and influences on his life. Rationalism and creativity, heart and mind, and architectural spirit versus architectural style. Within these conflicts are the sources of inspiration for Ho's work. Just as the black and white of yin and yang come together to create a single symbol, the different sides of Ho create the individual: an advocate and creator of architecture, paintings, sculptures and products.
