Abstract
It has just been announced that Denton Corker Marshall, as a practice, has been awarded the Gold Medal for architectural achievement by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA). Those at DCM pride themselves on the fact that they see themselves as a design group rather than a company headed by one godlike 'name'. DCM tries to keep personalities out of the business of architecture, yet this is hard for a journalist to resist with a character like James Gibson. Gibson is Director of the Hong Kong office and the DCM representative with whom hinge went to speak regarding the spirit behind this successful international practice. Gibson is emphatic about his likes and dislikes and passionate about the ethics of right and wrong. It was with a dry, abrasive humour and a candour that is uncommon in the tight-knit architectural community, that Gibson offered some intriguing insights into ways of working in Asia and the driving forces behind DCM's success.
