Abstract
The development of water-based town planning is a recurrent theme in the history of Southeast Asia. In Thailand the evidence is particularly eloquent. The following extract from Sumet Jumsai's book "Naga: cultural origins in Siam and the West Pacific" provides a fascinating insight into the way in which the concept of 'naga-land' (the water countries) is interpreted in the 'water towns'.
