Abstract
That Taiwan is booming is a matter of record; that property development, architecture and design are amongst the most authoritative indicators of the new socio-economic infrastructure is incontrovertible. And, regretfully, equally evident is the lack of a valid and enduring architectural heritage to support such momentous events. It is at such times that young lions wrestle with circumstance and history to take their legitimate places in the intensely competitive arena of architectural growth. Their adversaries, as so often, are the profit-orientated developer and shortsighted government. Their weapons are ability, vision and conscience. Simon Chang is one such young architect and his achievements, due in no small part to his extraordinary productivity, are already beginning to make a difference to the unacceptable face of Taipei.
