Abstract
If you want to change a neighbourhood, build a railway. Not only is this a very large and prominent physical intervention in any context, it profoundly affects activity too. People become more mobile. Existing residents have greater choice residents move in. Ralph Thomas tracks the development of KCRC's ambitious West Rail, which has just opened.
