Abstract
A familiar yet mysterious country to just about everybody, Vietnam is emerging as a new playground for the Nineties, while the rest of the world is slowing down. Together with the beautiful Indo-China scenery and tropical beaches, as well as the French-influenced culture and architecture, Vietnam has been identified by a growing number of tourists as their next port of call. This has sparked off the recent hotel-construction boom and will certainly give a chain reaction to other economic sectors. Having seen the economic progress in China, the Vietnamese government has also initiated a series of economic reforms to attract foreign investment. The government's desire to push ahead with an industrialisation and modernisation programme to attract foreign investment ends the 15-year closed-door policy after the Vietnam war.
