Abstract
Typically universities mature naturally over decades or centuries, growing and changing to meet new needs and priorities. The opportunity for Simon Kwan & Associates and Percy Thomas Partnership HK to design a tertiary-level institution for 10,000 students from the ground up allowed both architects and educators a unique opportunity to rethink many assumptions of traditional universities.
The resulting design of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Sai Kung encourages intellectual debate among students and a "cross fertilization" of disciplines while providing a functional institution for higher education.
