Abstract
Techniques for major civil engineering structures are changing. The lightening of structures is surprising: the mass and quantity of material is tending to diminish, despite still high performances. This is mainly due to a change in philosophy, where the use of each material is optimised, enabling the quantity to be reduced, thus leading to renewed inventiveness in design. To this can be added new constraints, such as taking into account environmental factors in particular on sites, admission rules to reinforced sites, and changing notions of risk and responsibility both for the site and the structure in service. All these factors are leading to a modern culture for civil engineering structures, as was typically the case for the Meaux viaduct in France.
