Abstract
Hammering out proportions, developing an image and working out the elevation until it all comes together as a building takes a large part of the "quality time" an architect spends at his drawing board.
That was also one of two elements governing the work carried out by architect Nelson Chen, principal designer of Wong Chen Associates Ltd, in designing the $69-million replacement headquarters building for public transport enterprise Kowloon Motor Bus Co (1933) Ltd, which is more popularly known as the KMB.
The other criterion was KMB management's expectation that Mr Chen would use inexpensive and easily sourced materials that, by being employed creatively and with careful workmanship, would create a look that was aesthetically but not extravagantly attractive, productively useful and easily maintained.
