Abstract
One of the most remarkable phenomena throughout the trip to France with HKIA was the French style of planning and manipulation of open space. Unlike Hong Kong where mega-structures always pair with miniature open space, the size and dramatic treatment of squares and piazzas, natural and left-over spaces in France maintain visually balanced with, and furnish the stage for the coupled buildings. Intimately relating to the function and design of the built environment, they psychologically change and prepare visitors, and lead them into the grandeur of architecture. In the following paragraphs, I will explain the different scales and fuctions of open space I encountered in France. (1) Open space as separation (2) Open space as event space (3) Open space for seeing/being seen (4) Open space as backdrop of architecture (5) Open space for privacy (6) Open space as a symbol of extravaganza (7) Open space as left-over space
