Abstract
After the recent earthquakes in Mexico and Turkistan, greater attention is being focused on the design of buildings which can resist extensive damage and minimise loss of life during major tectonic tremors. AAC features an article on the Building Research Institute of Japan and its counterpart in the US, the National Science Foundation, which together have co-operated to make great inroads into structural designs which are both economical to build and more resistant to earthquake damage.
