Abstract
Despite its name, the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment Method (HK-BEAM) extends beyond the environment and covers an increasing number of building-related socioeconomic issues such as land utilisation, site amenity and accessibility, pedestrain comfort, environmental hygiene and occupant health and well-being. HK-BEAM continues to evolve as an environmental sustainability assessment and, as parameters become better defined, ultimately towards a building-sustainability assessment to improve performance. The following factors determine the framework of criteria.
(1) Credit allocations and weightings
(2) Validity and practicality
(3) Transparency and clarity
(4) Setting the baseline
(5) Adopting recognised standards
(6) Prescriptive versus peformance-based
(7) Absolute versus relative performance
(8) Self-assessment
(9) Flexibility and objectivity
