Abstract
The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) is a statutory body in Hong Kong responsible for accelerating redevelopment to provide a better living environment and neighborhood. It was set up in 1999, replacing its predecessor Land Development Corporation (LDC) which was set up in 1988. The URA was officially established under the Urban Renewal Authority Ordinance (URAO) on May 1, 2001.
The mission of URA are to accelerate redevelopment by replacing old buildings with new to provide a better living environment and neighborhood; to enable and encourage the rehabilitation of dilapidated buildings to prevent urban decay; to preserve by maintaining and restoring buildings of historical and architectural value, and to sustain local characteristics; also to revitalize through enhancing and strengthening the socio-economic and environmental fabric for the benefic of urban communities.
The URA is tasked to implement an urban renewal programme consisting of 200 new projects and 25 uncompleted projects of the LDC in 20 years. The aim is to contain the problem of urban deterioration by the end of this period.
