Abstract
For the last decade, an interesting debate has raged in the United Kingdom about the standard of modern British architecture. The instigator of the controversy was the Prince of Wales. Over the years, in speeches, articles and a BBC documentary and book entitled A vision of Britain, Prince Charles has argued that much of Britain's modern architecture is unattractive and characterless. He believes it shows little regard for Britain's history, culture and environment. Robert Cairns examines the controversial views which have divided the British architectural community, but generated considerable public support. (1) The way forward
