Abstract
Manila is attempting to turn itself into a modern Asian city. Formidable economic and social problems must be tackled: poverty, crime, pollution, prostitution, traffic congestion, inadequate housing, unemployment and corruption. But progress is being made. Manila currently offers architects and contractors considerable opportunities for building and development. Moreover, despite economic problems elsewhere in Asia, the Philippines' economy is expanding. Robert Cairns visited Manila and looked at ways the city - and the rest of the Philippines - are modernising.
