Abstract
Public housing design in Hong Kong is often considered a production line affair, with the end result being mere provision of accommodation. Fast production, efficiency and standardisation dominate the design arena over and above concerns for quality of life, such as social interaction, environmental effects and contextual identity.
Current developments seldom make sensitive reference to the environment and the original community, especially in the case of urban redevelopment projects in redeveloped areas, certain specific living patterns of life had been established over decades of residence, and these helped to create the identity of the locale. Current proposals frequently destroy the local identity or the area's sense of community by establishing standardised design and planning, and this results in the production of undifferentiated housing estates across the city, lacking any sense of place or history.
Moreover, the present approach of stacking dwelling units with minimum circulation space in high-rise developments completely neglects the segregation of public domain from private, and in turn this acts to discourage communication between neighbours. This accounts for the loss of any sense of community in many new housing estates.
This project provides an alternative instilled with consideration for contextual identity, social communication and environmental factors, encouraging the public to re-evaluate their current standardised 'homes.'
