Abstract
For many people across the world, China remains a vast and vague land. Even those who routinely travel there on business may view the landscape as a Guangzhou/Shanghai/Beijing axis. Yet the mainland possesses far more potential then even these thriving metropolitan areas. The opportunities presented by "secondary" cities are obscured by inherent challenges. Logistics call for comprehensive solutions addressing less-than-developed infrastrucutre and planning guidelines. Those with ambitious plans often call in the eponymous firm of J.A.O. Design, Architects & Planners Ltd, a company that has established themselves in the niche market of mainland masterplanning. The town planners of Longwan District, Huludao City in Liaoning Province - one of Jao's recent efforts - were so impressed that they named the planned district James Jao Square.
