Abstract
Fire engineering, a relatively new engineering discipline, is introducted in this paper. Fire engineering designs take into account of specific building characteristics, occupant characteristics, use, hazard, location, etc., hence can achieve the following benefits:
Increased building functionality
Improved architectural appearance
Increased design flexibility
Use of innovated design, construction and materials
Achieving equal or better fire safety
Maximising cost effectiveness
This paper will discuss the normal process of a fire engineering design and presents some practical examples of using a fire engineering approach.
(1) Introduction
