Abstract
Chiasma means 'intertwining' in Greek and forms the inspiration and direction behind Steven Holl's design for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland. The New York architect was selected in a competition which was open to all architects from the eight Baltic and Nordic countries, plus four invited architects from elsewhere: Coop Himmelblau from Vienna and Los Angeles, Alvaro Siza of Portugal, Kazuo Shinohara of Japan and Stephen Holl himself. The jury, made up of local architects, public officials and cultural figures, were impressed with the sculptural qualities of the building form and equally impressed with the sensitive interior provision for the display of the art works.
