Abstract
Timber has long been used widely in architectural designs. Figures shows that Hong Kong imported 7.3 million cubic metres of timber in 1999, which sources say were mainly from Malaysia, Indonesia, Germany, China and the USA. A huge 80% of it was consumed by the construction industry in which some of them are used for temporary work such as formwork and hoardings. The abundant use of timber require massive logging, which causes critical damage to forests if they are harvested unsustainably. The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) together with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is desperately trying to stop these disastrous activities that harm the ecology of these natural environments.
