Continuous improvement for Design & Construction using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) in ISO 9000

Abstract
In the manufacturing sector, companies have successfully applied concurrent engineering tools, including Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to determine the customer's need for design at its early stages of development. Examples from Japan, the United States, Sweden and Chile have shown that there is potential for applying QFD in building design. This paper suggests that adoption of QFD should not be considered in isolation but should instead be integrated within existing ISO 9000 quality management systems in Architecture/Engineering/Construction(AEC) organisations. The intergration between QFD concepts and ISO 9000 requirements may help to achieve synergy when pursuing quality construction. This may also help to realise continuing improvement in ISO 9000 quality management systems following the incorporation of QFD concepts within the ISO 9000 framework.
