Abstract
If you set out to leave your mark on a city - to create something that became not only associated with that place, but also in a sense redefined it - you could do a lot worse than Shanghai's Xintiandi development. Everyone living in the city knows it, everyone visiting the city is told about it, and a hell of a lot of people nowhere near Shanghai are studying it. For its lessons, for its look, for its business plan. Even though the project is only a fraction complete, by almost any yardstick it would already have to be measured an astonishing success. And this despite the fact that few of the tenants who have opened restaurants, bars or shops there have reputedly made much money.
