Abstract
Although there are a number of Millennium projects now dotting the British landscape, RMJM's Falkirk Wheel in Scotland is more than the sum of its - albeit fascinating - parts. Designed for British Waterways, the Wheel functions as a boat lift that allows east and west to be connected again by water after almost 70 years. Yet far beyond its utilitarian nature is the fact that it was intentionally designed to be a celebration of 21st Century Scotland. Deceptively simple and pure in form, the Wheel has taken on 'monument' status and is a must-see item on tourists' agendas, as well as a source of pride for Scottish natives.
