Abstract
Covering 17 hectares of land between Causeway Bay and Tin Hau, Victoria Park is the largest urban park in Hong Kong. Opened in 1957, the park has long sat quietly between the high-rise development that has transformed it from popular open recreation space into an"urban lung" - a spacious and convenient location to escape to from fumes, crowds and noise. However, decades of use as both a park and events venue had left facilities in need of repair and upgrades and, in 1998, the former Urban Services Department provided its design brief to Architectural Services Department.
