Abstract
In the face of what one might call an intimidating genreal context, it may seem odd to celebrate anything at all, let alone the achievements of a profession struggling mightily to put a brave face on the worst economic environment in decades. Ask some Hong Kong architects how work is going and they ask back, "What work?" Yet sometimes it's important to carry on, no matter what the oracles portend. And after all, with the construction mecca of the mainland next door, SAR practitioners have been offered a way out of local inactivity. The Hong Kong Institute of Architects holds an annual awards programme that gives recognition to outstanding architecture by its members. There may come a day when they offer an award for simply having any work at all, but for now at least, things don't look too bad. Indeed, judging by the quality of the nominees and winners, lean times have encouraged high standards. Well that's interesting. Is it possible that architects are appreciating commissions more than ever, and giving greater attention to those they get? Hard to say, but what is true, is that the 2002 Awards serve up a chance to forget briefly the woe and gloom, take due pride in our local talent and revel in some very fine buildings.
