Abstract
The Republic of Korea is one of the countries that has been under the spot light in recent years. Not only because it is one of the first countries that recovered from the Asian financial storm, but because of their national spirit shown in the World cup matches.
Opened on March 29, 2001 after the construction work of long standing since 1992, the Incheon International Airport (IIA) is one of the major construction projects of Korea. Also known as "The Winged City", the complex fully reveals the ambition: flying ahead of the competition in the global airport industry.
When planners were developing the concept for the newly 5,610 hectares of reclaimed land located between two islands, Yeongjong-do and Yongyu-do, they realized that in order to meet the changing needs, they would have to build more than an airport. The result was a vision for a community, a metropoils of sorts, to serve not only Korea, but also the entire region of Northeast Asia.
The Winged City consists of Terminal Building and Transportation Centre and is designed by Fentress Bradburn Architects and Terry Farrell & Partners respectively.
