A note on the 2004 Sino-Japan work safety symposium

Abstract
The 2004 Sino-Japan Work Safety Symposium was held in February, 2004 in Hefei, Anhui, China, This article will report on the key points discussed in the meeting. The development of Safety Science and Technology in China up to 2020 was firstly introduced. The 10th Industrial Accidents Prevention Plan in Japan was then presented. An example of implementing the Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) in a big Japanese chemical plant was illustrated. Improvements on accidents prevention and better safety achieved were reported. It was proposed to implement localized emergency schemes in China. The importance of mass city fires in dense urban areas was pointed out. Concerns on fire safety provisions in green and sustainable buildings were also highlighted. Moreover, fire and safety research at a Chinese university was reported. As safety culture should be a concern on safety awareness, the history of safety culture development in China was introduced. In addition, a review on OSHMS for Chinese enterprises was reported with suggestions on reformulating the scheme regularly. Finally, safety issues on gas stations in Beijing were pointed out. The symposium ended smoothly with summaries given by leaders from both countries.
