Abstract
West Rail Phase 1, planned and constructed by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), is a domestic line running from Yen Chow Street Station to Tuen Mun Centre Station with 7 intermediate stations at Mei Foo, Tsuen Wan West, Kam Tin, Yuen Long, Long Ping, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun North. The programme is anticipated for completion by the end of 2003.
According to Mr. Howard McKay, Construction Manager of West Rail Division, Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, KCRC had commissioned numerous consultants for conducting diverse technical studies at the initial planning stage to revise various alignment and station options. Upon the Executive Council's authorization of the West Rail project last September, KCRC started preparing and inviting for tenders. Tai Lam Tunnel and Kwai Tsing Tunnels are the prelude of this dramatic civil and construction programme beyond the century.
