Abstract
Nowadays, the Hong Kong citizens can enjoy fresh water simply by switching on the water taps. However, the history of local water supply can be traced back to the sinking works of five wells in urban areas in 1851, and the completion of Pok Fu Lam Reservoir in 1863 led off the first public water scheme in Hong Kong. Owing to the lack of natural water resources, many Hong Kong people suffered from water restriction in the old days. In order to solve the problem of water shortage, the Water Supplies Department (WSD) has reached several agreements with Guangdong authorities for incremental water supply, making significant contribution to improve the living standard of the public. Currently, some 70% of raw water of Hong Kong is imported from Guangdong Province, and the yell of "Switch off the water taps downstairs" was no longer heard in the last 20 years.
